The purpose of this interactive learning program is to assist those
having responsibility for the navigation of ships to become
proficient in the recognition of navigational marks used
by the I.A.L.A. System of Buoyage, and to be able to manoeuvre
safely in accordance with the system.
This program has three main sections starting with an
introduction to
the I.A.L.A. system, followed by a guide to
recognition of the different
marks, and an easy to use exercise that evaluates the learner's
understanding of how to navigate within the system.
Using structured, interactive training techniques, this program
provides students with a firm understanding of the I.A.L.A. System
of Buoyage to enhance navigational safety. It can be used to
introduce new seafarers to the system or as a refresher course
to polish existing skills.
Through immediate, positive feedback, the user learns to identify
the I.A.L.A. system of lights and buoys and reinforce their knowledge
in a learner-friendly, self-paced environment. A scoring system
enables them to monitor their progress.
Students test their new knowledge from a 'virtual bridge' perspective
which requires them to identify the buoys and lights and take
appropriate and timely action.
Together with the
iTEST,
available separately, this computer-based learning program is an effective
resource for the competence development of seafarers.
